The Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling program is one of the most storied in NCAA Division I athletics. Based in Iowa City, Iowa, the University of Iowa Hawkeyes are a member of the Big Ten Athletic Conference. The Hawkeyes are currently the reigning NCAA Wrestling Champions. Iowa is second in NCAA history with 23 national championships, all of which have come since 1975. Sports Illustrated recently named the Iowa program one of the top sports dynasties of the 20th century. The Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling team won the Big Ten tournament and the NCAA tournament last year to end the year. Lead by coach Tom Brands they were able to go 23-0 in an over all team record over the year. They ended the season with 6 all americans and 3 national champions. This team is a team full of winners. They dont like to lose and they arent afraid to work hard to get to the top of their game. They practice four days a week year round and have the craziest coach known to man. I went to a wrestling camp with him. It was one hundred degrees out side and this guy was wearing a coat and two sweat shirts but I did get better for working with him and that is all that counts. Wrestling for these men has been a life long commitment and most of them have been doing it since they were at least five or six years old. When Iowa hired Tom Brands, another former Hawkeye wrestler who had also served as an assistant to Gable everyone was excited to wrestle with the Hawkeyes. Brands had been head coach at Virginia Tech prior to his return to Iowa City. In Iowa's first season under Brands, they would finish third in the Big Ten championships and eighth at the NCAA championships. The Hawkeyes rapidly returned to the national spotlight during the 2007-08 season, winning their first Big Ten championship in four years and their first NCAA championship in eight years and 21st national title overall. They repeated as 2009 NCAA champions despite having no individual champions that year. Iowa returned to the NCAA championships with a dominant performance in 2010, having already locked up the team title before the end of the second day of competition. They finished with 3 individual champions and 2 runners-up. The team then smiled for the first time all year during the post event team picture.
